Critical Voices 3 - Speakers - Details

Stephanie Springgay Stephanie Springgay

Stephanie Springgay is an Assistant Professor of Art Education and Women's Studies at Penn State University. She completed her PhD from the University of British Columbia. Her dissertation, Inside the Visible: Youth understandings of body knowledge through touch, examined adolescent experiences of the body in and as a form of visual culture.

In addition, as a multidisciplinary artist working with installation and video-based art, she investigates the relationship between artistic practices and methodologies of educational research through what she describes as 'a/r/tography', an approach which she will be outlining on her visit to Dublin.

Recent publications include: Thinking through bodies: Bodied encounters and the process of meaning making in an email generated art project; Studies in Art Education; An intimate distance: Youth interrogations of intercorporeal cartography as visual narrative text (Journal of the Canadian Association of Curriculum Studies); Body as fragment: Art making, researching, and teaching as a boundary shift; A/r/tography: Rendering Self through arts-based living inquiry; and A/r/tography as Living Inquiry through Art And Text, Qualitative Inquiry with Rita Irwin and Sylvia Kind. She is also co-editing Curriculum and the Cultural Body with Peter Lang and Debra Freedman.
