As part of the Arts Council’s Critical Voices 3 programme, Adam Phillips, British author, cultural critic, psychoanalyst and Freud specialist will be in conversation with Professor Ciarán Benson. This event will take place at 6.30pm, Friday 7 April, in the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre, Dublin.
Adam Phillips is an author and a psychoanalyst in private practice in London. His books and essays on literature, history, philosophy, child psychology, biography and psychoanalysis include: On Kissing, Tickling and Being Bored; On Flirtation; Darwin’s Worms; Houdini’s Box; and Essays on Psychoanalysis and Literature. He is a distinguished literary stylist, whose erudite and playful essays have been compared to those of Montaigne and Emerson, and he writes regularly for the London Review of Books, The Observer and The New York Times.
He is also General Editor of the new Penguin translations of the complete works of Sigmund Freud, including the recently published Penguin Freud Reader, a collection of Freud’s papers on the methodology of psychoanalysis.
The paperback edition of his most recent book, Going Sane, on the subject of sanity, has just been published by Penguin.
Professor Ciarán Benson holds the Chair of Psychology in University College Dublin. He is a former Chair of the Arts Council and a prolific author and visual art critic. His most recent book is The Cultural Psychology of Self, published by Routledge.
Critical Voices 3
Critical Voices is the Arts Council’s biennial programme of public debate about art, culture and ideas. This year’s programme turns the spotlight onto the artist and society, and reflects current international intellectual debate.
In total Critical Voices will consist of over 30 visits to Ireland by international artists, writers, thinkers and commentators on culture, taking place between now and December. Speakers will include figures whose work and interests cross cultural, national and linguistic boundaries and who explore a variety of genres. The programme is curated by journalist and critic Helen Meany in collaboration with a wide range of Irish arts organisations.
